Series Statement: Topics in English Linguistics [TiEL] ; 105
Content: Studies of digital communication technologies often focus on the apparently unique set of multimodal resources afforded to users and the development of innovative linguistic strategies for performing mediatised identities and maintaining online social networks. This edited volume interrogates the novelty of such practices by establishing a transhistorical approach to the study of digital communication. The transhistorical approach explores language practices as lived experiences grounded in historical contexts, and aims to identify those elements of human behaviour that transcend historical boundaries, looking beyond specific developments in communication technologies to understand the enduring motivations and social concerns that drive human communication. The volume reveals long-term patterns in the indexical functions of seemingly innovative written and multimodal resources and the ideologies that underpin them, and shows that methods are not necessarily contingent on their datasets: historical analytic frameworks can be applied to digital data and newer approaches used to understand historical data. These insights present exciting opportunities for English language researchers, both historical and modern.

    Series Statement: T&T Clark theology
Content: "Three hundred years after his death, Matthew Henry (1662-1714) remains arguably the best known expositor of the Bible in English, due largely to his massive six-volume Exposition of the Old and New Testaments. However, Henry's famous commentary is by no means the only expression of his engagement with the Scriptures. His many sermons and works on Christian piety - including the still popular Method for Prayer - are saturated with his peculiarly practical approach to the Bible. To mark the tercentenary of Henry's death, Matthew A. Collins and Paul Middleton have brought together notable historians, theologians, and biblical scholars to celebrate his life and legacy. Representing the first serious examination of Henry's body of work and approach to the Bible, Matthew Henry: The Bible, Prayer, and Piety opens a scholarly conversation about the place of Matthew Henry in the eighteenth-century nonconformist movement, his contribution to the interpretation of the Bible, and his continued legacy in evangelical piety"--Bloomsbury Collections

Content: "This fascinating collection of essays charts for the first time the range of responses by scholars on both sides of the conflict to the outbreak of war in August 1914. The volume examines how scholars, like their compatriots from every walk of life, responded to the great crisis they faced and shows that with relatively few exceptions, scholars wanted to contribute to the war effort. But how? Some joined up as soldiers, as in the case of the Leipzig New Testament Professor Caspar René Gregory, who at 67 was Germany's oldest volunteer. More commonly, biblical scholars and theologians put pen to paper as part of the torrent of patriotic publication that arose both in the United Kingdom and in Germany. This volume shows how in many cases scholars were repeating or refining common arguments about the responsibility for the war. In Germany and Britain, where the Bible was still central to a Protestant national culture, we also find numerous more specialized works, where biblical scholars brought their own disciplinary expertise to bear on the matter of war in general, and this war in particular. As such the volume offers new insights into the place of both the bible and biblical scholarship in early 20th-century culture."--Bloomsbury Publishing

Content: Shifting Stacks examines emergent issues at the nexus of academic librarianship and theological education. It seeks to facilitate and inspire forward-thinking conversation that may guide a reorientation of theological and religious studies librarianship that is adaptive and responsive to change and emerging needs in librarianship, theological education, and the broader global community. The need for substantive conversation on these topics has grown more important and critical as the effects of the current global pandemic ripple through our institutions. Shifting Stacks includes an introduction by James Estes and Myka Kennedy Stephens, and contributions from Christopher A. Rogers (transformational theological literacy), Andrew Keck (open access publishing), Paul A. Tippey (digital libraries), Shawn Goodwin and Evan Kuehn (topic modeling), Megan Welsh and Alexander Luis Odicino (collection development), Stephen D. Crocco (transitioning libraries), Kerrie Stevens and Siong Ng (ANZTLA-Atla relationship), and Carisse Mickey Berryhill (forward-looking reflection)
