Il presente studio mette in luce l’insistenza con cui il tema della trasmigrazione delle anime ricorre nell’opera di Goethe e, più in generale, nei testi da lui letti e nel clima culturale da lui respirato. La monografia si apre con la presentazione delle fonti d’ispirazione del poeta, ossia con l’analisi di alcuni scritti neoplatonici, ermetici, cabalistici e induisti, e con la dimostrazione che nel secondo Settecento il tema in questione era tutt’altro che una rarità negli ambienti intellettuali tedeschi. Il secondo capitolo spiega le diverse forme assunte dalla dottrina della trasmigrazione delle anime nelle lettere e nelle conversazioni goethiane, il terzo nelle opere composte fra il 1773 e il 1827, il quarto è interamente dedicato ai Wanderjahre e il quinto al Faust. Fondendo le più antiche tradizioni con le scoperte scientifiche della sua epoca, Goethe arriva a indicare, come possibili ricettacoli dell’anima, tanto corpi di natura umana quanto corpi di natura vegetale, animale e celeste. E a dar vita, mediante la figura faustiana di Elena, ad alcuni dei versi più complessi che siano mai stati scritti sul concetto di viaggio cosmico dell’anima
