Der kleine Rabe gilt als Aussenseiter, denn anders als die anderen Rabenkinder muss er sich die Zeit vertreiben, während seine Mutter etwas zu essen sucht. Ihm gelingt ein besonderes Kunststück: Er kann auf seinem Schnabel stehen. Eines Tages macht er sich auf den Weg, den schönsten aller Vögel, den Pfau, zu suchen, der von morgens bis abends sein Rad schlägt. Doch der kleine Rabe ist enttäuscht, denn Radschlagen findet er langweilig, und der Pfau ist eitel und angeberisch und kann nicht mal ordentlich Schnabelstehen. Der unscheinbare Rabe überzeugt die anderen Vögel spielend davon, dass es viel lustiger ist, auf dem Schnabel zu stehen und so wird der einst mächtige Pfau zum Gespött der Vögel. Die Botschaft in Rafik Schamis origineller Geschichte ist auch in der Neuauflage so wichtig und zeitlos wie im Original : Sei mutig und geh unbeirrt deinen Weg im Leben, so wie der Protagonist, der Held der Geschichte.
