"Paul Dessau schreibt Operetten- und Filmmusik - sowohl zu Bergfilmen mit Leni Riefenstahl als auch zu Trickfilmen Walt Disneys. Im Ersten Weltkrieg ist der gebürtige Hamburger Soldat, im Zweiten jüdischer Exilant in Frankreich und in den USA. In Amerika arbeitet er auf einer Hühnerfarm und schreibt als anonymer Komponist die Klänge zu einigen Zelluloid-Blockbustern.Als überzeugter Kommunist geht Paul Dessau in die DDR. Er arbeitet mit Bertolt Brecht sowie der Regie-Ikone Ruth Berghaus, seiner vierten Frau, und prägt maßgeblich die sozialistische Musikszene und Bühnenkunst. Seine "Thälmann-Kolonne" wird zum Gassenhauer, gleichzeitig wird er wegen seiner oft eigenwilligen Klangsprache als Formalist verschrien. Er wird zum nach außen gefeierten, nach innen angefeindeten DDR-Staatskomponisten.Die Dokumentation skizziert ein Künstlerleben zwischen Anpassung und Abstoßung, politischem Idealismus und musikalischer Individualität, in dem sich wie unter einem Brennglas die wechselhafte deutsch-deutsche Geschichte des 20.
