„Am 23. August 1942 greift die deutsche Armee Stalingrad an. Die Schlacht wurde zum psychologischen Wendepunkt des Zweiten Weltkriegs ein Sinnbild deutschen Größenwahns und russischer Leidensfähigkeit. Dieser Film will weder klagen noch anklagen, er erzählt die Geschichte aus der Sicht einiger Teilnehmer. Auf Basis von ihren Briefen, die ihre Empfänger nie erreichten, wird geschildert was sie erlebten, erlitten und mit ihren Briefen zum Ausdruck brachten: Der Wolganebel, der die Sicht nahm, unerbittliche Kälte, Kämpfe, Hunger, Schmerz, Leid, Heimweh und Gefangenschaft. Hier ist das Spielgeschehen eingewoben in den authentischen und ungefärbten Rahmen des Auf- und Untergangs, dessen Akteure leibhaftig sind. Alles ist wahrheitsgetreu.
