Los escenarios de futuro son narraciones o enunciados sobre los posibles futuros, construidos de manera metódica y rigurosa, con unas características específicas y la participación de los expertos y actores de un sistema. Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial se inició el uso de los métodos científicos en los estudios de futuro (Son, 2015), dotando a los ejercicios para la construcción de los escenarios de futuro de un conjunto de características entre las que se encuentran los métodos para la construcción de estos, los cuales pueden ser agrupados en cualitativos, cuantitativos y mixtos (Popper, 2011); los patrocinadores, que pueden ser universidades, fundaciones, organismos multilaterales, grupos de investigación o empresas; el horizonte de tiempo, que por ser a largo plazo debe ser superior a cinco años, y el número de escenarios donde se proponen las posibles alternativas de futuro
