La poblacion indigena guatemalteca ha representado 53.7 por ciento del total en 1950, 42.2 por ciento en 1964 y 43.8 por ciento en 1973 (p1). Es una poblacion eminentemente rural, radicada principalmente al Oeste y Noroeste del pais. Sus diferencias respecto a la poblacion no-indigena son senaladas en este trabajo en cuanto a alfabetismo, actividad economica y estado civil. Se comparan, ademas, los niveles de fecundidad, estimados segun diferentes procedimientos, y las probabilidades de morir desde el nacimiento hasta las edades exactas 1, 2, 3 y 5
