Zu einer Familiengeschichte der besonderen Art hat die Autorin ihre eigenen familiären Erzählungen, Mythen, Erinnerungen und Überlieferungen verarbeitet, und das in spannender, nicht immer ganz leicht zu lesender, kunstvoll durchkomponierter Romanform. Viel Ungewöhnliches kommt hier zusammen: beide Großelternpaare sind in ihren jungen Jahren vor dem 1. Weltkrieg in die damalige deutsche Kolonie Kaiser-Wilhelms-Land auf Neuguinea ausgewandert, als Missionare und Bauern auf einer Missionsplantage, überzeugt von ihrem protestantisch-christlichen und deutsch-nationalen Auftrag. Auch nach dem Verlust der Kolonie missionieren die frommen Deutschen "ihre" Papua nach Kräften weiter. Erst nach Ende des 2. Weltkriegs kehren sie enttäuscht und gedemütigt in eine Heimat zurück, die alle Pracht und Herrlichkeit eingebüßt hat. Der Roman mit dem gut gewählten, vieldeutigen Titel holt ein Stück eher unbekannter deutscher Kolonialgeschichte ans Licht, gewährt einen vielschichtigen Zugang dazu und trägt dazu bei, es vor dem Vergessen zu bewahren. Angesichts aktueller Diskussionen sehr zu empfehlen, für große Bestände.

Vier naive junge Bayern, deutschnational, fromm und von missionarischem Eifer erfüllt, wandern vor dem 1. Weltkrieg in eine (damals) deutsche Südsee-Kolonie aus. Damit nimmt eine ungewöhnliche Familiengeschichte ihren Anfang, die tiefe Einblicke in den Traum vom deutschen Herrenmenschen ermöglicht.
