Alfred Andersch ist Westdeutschlands berühmtester Deserteur. Sein autobiografischer Bericht Die Kirschen der Freiheit (1952) beschreibt die Umstände seiner Fahnenflucht aus Hitlers Wehrmacht am 6. Juni 1944 in Italien. Aber war er überhaupt ein Deserteur? Seit in seinem Nachlass ein Text auftauchte, den Andersch schon 1945 im Kriegsgefangenenlager geschrieben hatte und in dem die Gefangennahme gar nicht als Desertion geschildert wird ( Amerikaner Erster Eindruck ), sind Zweifel daran laut geworden, ob Andersch zu Recht in der Gedenkstätte Deutscher Widerstand in Berlin als Deserteur geehrt wird. Niemals bislang ist der Versuch unternommen worden, Anderschs Selbstbeschreibung anhand militärhistorischer Quellen zu überprüfen. Das vorliegende Buch versammelt diese Dokumente und erzählt eine in Teilen andere Geschichte: Die Kirschen der Freiheit im Lichte der Akten.
