Content: Adrian Frutiger hat das internationale Schriftschaffen seit 1950 maßgeblich geprägt. Sein Schriftprogramm Univers und die maschinenlesbare Schrift OCR-B sind Meilensteine der Typografie wie auch die Frutiger, die er ursprünglich für die Pariser Flughäfen entworfen hatte und mit der er einen Qualitätsstandard für Signalisationsschriften schuf. Erstmals werden alle Schriften - vom Entwurf bis zur Vermarktung - abgebildet sowie mit Bezug zu Technik und zu artverwandten Schriften analysiert. Unveröffentlichte, nicht realisierte Schriften sowie über 100 Logos vervollständigen das Bild.

Content: The Swiss type designer Adrian Frutiger decisively influenced the international creation of typefaces after 1950. His Univers typeface and the machine-readable font OCR-B are milestones, as is his type for the Paris airports, which evolved into the Frutiger typeface. All set new standards for signage types. In all, he created some fifty types, including Ondine, Méridien, Avenir, and Vectora. Based on conversations with Frutiger himself and on extensive research, this publication provides a highly detailed and accurate account of the type designer's artistic development. All of his types - from the design phase to the marketing stage - are illustrated and analyzed with reference to the technology and related types. Hitherto unpublished types that were never realized and more than one hundred logos complete the picture.

Content: Professor Ludger Hovestadt's Institute for Computer-Aided Architectural Design at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) Zürich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich) is widely regarded as one of the world's most important institutes currently working at the interface between architecture and information technology. Content: The desk is a place of work and of action, but it also serves as a place to exhibit personal things and preferences. Thus it always characterizes in two ways a material and symbolic unity. The desk is not only very informative in itself, but also must always be studied and understood in the context of its cultural, gender-specific, and field-related surroundings. The focus of this study is a comparative analysis of the use of desks. Desks in insurance companies, banks, administrative authorities, call centers, and design studios in twelve countries on all continents were studied. This publication presents the results in the form of extensive visual material, empirical analyses, and critical essays. The study was carried out by the Köln International School of Design (KISD) in collaboration with universities in Hong Kong; New York; Seoul; Taipei; Curitiba, Brazil; Pune, India; Auckland; Milan; and Fukuoka, Japan.
