Im Laufe der letzten hundert Jahre etwa sind einige zusammenfassende Veröffentlichungen erschienen, die sich teilweise oder ausschlie6lich mit dem Gebiete der Alchemie beschäftigen. Ich nenne nur die Werke von Gmelin, Schmieder, Kopp, Berthelot und Edmund von Lippmann, besonders sein Buch über die "Entstehung und Ausbreitung der Alchemie", Berlin 1919. Wer sich mit der Geschichte der Naturwissenschaften und besonders der Chemie und Alchemie befa6t, wird in diesen Büchern einen ausgezeichneten tlberblick über die genannten Gebiete und wertvolle Aufklärungen über Ur sachen und Zusammenhänge finden. Wer aber in die oft fremdartig erscheinende Gedankenwelt der Alchemie weiter eindringen will, muf} sich in' die Werke der alten Meister und Forscher selbst vertiefen. Da nun die meisten alchemistischen Abhandlungen in lateinischer Sprache geschrieben und auch sonst nicht leicht zugänglich sind, so wollte ich ein für das Wesen der Alchemie bedeutsames Werk übersetzen und erklären. Ich wählte für diesen Zweck eine ziemlich frühe Arbeit, in der die alche mistischen Gedanken ursprünglicher, reiner und weniger verwischt erscheinen als in späterer Zeit, und ich fing schon vor mehr als zehn Jahren an einige Bücher zu übertragen, die, vom Mittelalter bis in die neuere Zeit, ganz besonders ge schätzt wurden und, auf Grund ihres Alters und Inhaltes, als hervorragend ehr würdige und wertvolle Erzeugnisse des alchemistischen Schrifttumes galten
