Sie selbst wollte nichts als frei sein, und floh unter Lebensgefahr aus der Sklaverei in den Südstaaten der USA. Danach half sie als Teil der ̄Underground RailroadØ, eines geheimen Netzwerks der Sklavereigegner, viele andere Sklaven zu befreien. Im Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg kämpfte sie an der Seite der Nordstaaten, deren Sieg zur Sklavenbefreiung führte. Dennoch musste sie mit ansehen, dass die meisten Schwarzen weiter in Armut lebten und im System der Rassentrennung unter sich bleiben mussten."
