Die Hamburgische Sezession wurde 1919 gegründet. Die progressive, avantgardeorientierte, bald elitäre Künstlervereinigung prägte das Kulturleben Hamburgs bis 1933 nachhaltig. Ihr Anliegen war es, in Hamburg ein kunstfreundliches Milieu zu etablieren. In den Werken der 52 Mitglieder spiegelt sich der Einfluss der Kunstströmungen jener Zeit, später entwickelte sich auch ein eigener Stil. Namentlich gegenwärtig sind heute noch Friedrich Ahlers-Hestermann, Eduard Bargheer, Arnold Fiedler, Willem Grimm, Erich Hartmann, Karl Kluth, Emil Maetzel, Dorothea Maetzel-Johannsen, Rolf Nesch, Anita Rée oder Gretchen Wohlwill. Dieser Bildband stellt Werke der Sezessionisten vor und zeigt deren stilistische Entwicklung. Er beschreibt Motive und Sujets, stellt die Aktivitäten der Gruppe, insbesondere deren Ausstellungsreihe und Künstlerfeste vor und nimmt die Folgen des Ersten Weltkriegs, die Stadt Hamburg und den Hafen, das Rotlichtmilieu, Freizeitbeschäftigungen, aber auch die Ächtung jüdischer Künstler durch das NS-Regime in den Blick.
