Ist die Gründung des britischen Wohlfahrtsstaates eine verlorene, vom Thatcherismus zerstörte Chance oder ein Projekt, das noch auf seine Vollendung wartet? Im Gespräch mit Zeitzeugen versucht Ken Loach, sich einer Antwort zu nähern. Nachdem die Labour Party im Sommer 1945 überraschend die absolute Mehrheit in Großbritannien erreicht hatte, wurden Schlüsselindustrien und viele Dienstleistungsbetriebe verstaatlicht, darunter Bergwerke, Eisenbahnen, Gas- und Elektrizitätswerke, Stahlwerke und Werften sowie die Bank von England. Schon bald folgte die Einführung der kostenlosen Krankenbehandlung durch den National Health Service. Bedürftigen wurde finanzielle Beihilfe durch das Nationale Unterstützungsgesetz zugesichert. Dieser "neue Sozialismus" wurde getragen von beispiellosem Gemeinsinn und Klassenbewusstsein, deren Einfluss viele Jahre anhielt. Fast alle dieser Errungenschaften fielen den Strukturreformen Margaret Thatchers zum Opfer, Premierministerin von 1979 bis 1990. Ken Loachs hoch betagte Gesprächspartner dozieren nicht, vielmehr erzählen sie sehr persönliche Geschichten, wie sie nicht mehr lange zu hören sein werden.
