Ein schmaler Band, auf dem Umschlagbild eine leere Bank: Schon auf den 1. Blick hebt sich dieses Buch vom Strom der Neuheiten ab. Die flämische Historikerin Aline Sax erzählt von einem blinden Mädchen und einem schwarzafrikanischen Soldaten, die sich während des Ersten Weltkriegs in einem Dorf hinter der Frontlinie begegnen. Dabei wechselt die Perspektive zwischen dem Mädchen - auf weissem - und dem Soldaten - auf schwarzem Papier. Sax' klare poetische Sprache, die Mirjam Pressler sehr schön übersetzt hat, verzichtet auf alles Überflüssige. Auf den weissen Seiten nimmt der Leser die Welt mit den geschärften Sinnen der Blinden wahr: Den Geruch des Fremden, der eines Tages auf der Lieblingsbank des Mädchens sitzt, und seine warme Stimme, wenn er von Afrika erzählt. Zwischen den Text schieben sich die Illustrationen von Ann de Bode, flächig und in Schwarz-Weiss gehalten, die den Schmerz des Krieges und manchmal einen Hoffnungsschimmer sichtbar machen. Auch wenn diese Freundschaftsgeschichte für sich stehen kann, wäre ein Nachwort zum historischen Kontext schön. Gern empfohlen (Buchmesse 2016: Flandern/NL)
