Giuseppe De Vito (1924-2015) a réuni une étonnante collection de tableaux du XVIIe siècle napolitain, dont il est un spécialiste reconnu. Cet amateur éclairé, ingénieur devenu historien de l'art, se passionna pour le naturalisme, héritier du Caravage, fortement marqué par les personnalités de Battistello, de Jusepe de Ribera ou encore de l'énigmatique Maître de l'Annonce aux bergers. Il fit également l'acquisition d'un très bel ensemble d'oeuvres influencées par le classicisme romain et émilien, le coloris vénitien et les modèles venus du nord de l'Europe, dues aux pinceaux de Massimo Stanzione, Bernardo Cavallino, Antonio De Bellis, Aniello Falcone ou Micco Spadaro. Par ailleurs, il s'attacha aux deux grands protagonistes de la scène parthénopéenne de la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle, Mattia Preti et Luca Giordano, ainsi qu'à la nature morte, l'un de ses sujets de recherche privilégié. Naples fut en effet l'un des foyers les plus novateurs dans ce genre pictural, dont de nombreux artistes assurèrent la réputation européenne, comme Luca Forte, Paolo Porpora, les Recco et les Ruoppolo. Les quarante oeuvres présentées, aujourd'hui conservées à la Fondazione De Vito, témoignent des choix d'un collectionneur passionné et de la vitalité artistique de la Naples du Seicento.

Ce catalogue rend compte de l'exposition présentant une sélection de tableaux représentatifs de l'art napolitain du XVIIe siècle, issus de la collection rassemblée par l'ingénieur Giuseppe De Vito et conservée à Florence. Organisée en partenariat avec la Fondation De Vito qui a prêté pour l'occasion 40 tableaux, des émules du Caravage aux premiers feux du baroque. Des oeuvres de Fracanzano, Caracciolo, Ribera, Stanzione, Preti, Pacecco et Spadaro sont notamment présentées.
