Le tome V nous entraîne dans la Chine du Sud, récemment conquise par l'empereur mongol. Mêlant divers déplacements effectués au cours de son long séjour au service du Grand Khan, le voyageur vénitien présente l'ex-empire des Song selon un itinéraire qui mène de la ville de Huaian, sise à l'époque sur le Fleuve Jaune, au grand port méridional de Quanzhou, lieu d'embarquement pour le retour des Polo vers l'Europe en 1291. Chemin faisant, le lecteur suit le Grand Canal et fait étape dans les cités célèbres de Yanzhou, puis de Suzhou, la Venise chinoise, avant de parvenir à Hangzhou, la grande métropole méridionale, et d'atteindre enfin les ports animés de Fuzhou et de Quanzhou. Une digression vers l'intérieur des terres permet d'évoquer le long siège de Xiangyang et de présenter rapidement Kaifeng, ancienne ville impériale. Marco Polo porte toujours un regard curieux sur les paysages, les édifices, les produits et les coutumes remarquables. Hangzhou retient particulièrement son attention. L'ancienne capitale des Song, image vivante d'une civilisation raffinée, le séduit par son magnifique urbanisme, sa foisonnante richesse et son fourmillement de vie. Grâce à elle la merveille devient réalité.

Marco Polo's itinerary in Volume V takes us into southern China, recently conquered by the Mongol emperor. It leads from Huaian, then situated on the banks of the Yellow River, to the great southern port of Quanzhou, where Marco Polo would embark back to Europe in 1291. On route, the reader follows the Grand Canal and stops in the famous cities of Yanzhou, then Suzhou - the Venice of China - before reaching Hangzhou, the magnificent Song capital, and finally the busy ports of Fuzhou and Quanzhou. Marco Polo hasn't lost any of his curiosity in the landscapes, the buildings, local products or customs.
