Seit dem 11. September 2001 ist der Islam zu einem zentralen Feindbild der westlichen Welt geworden. In unserer Bilderpolitik kommen zahlreiche Metaphern des Ver- und Entschleierns zum Einsatz, um das Eigene vom Fremden abzugrenzen. Der Okzident wird als freiheitlich, offen und transparent dargestellt, während der Orient verschleiert erscheint: undemokratisch, rückschrittlich, geheimnisvoll und bedrohlich. Diese politische Metaphorik ist geschlechtlich codiert. Die geheimnisvolle Haremsdame oder die unterdrückte Orientalin gehören seit der Aufklärung ebenso zu ihrem Repertoire wie Allegorien der Wahrheit, Freiheit und Gleichheit in Bildern nackter Weiblichkeit. Die interdisziplinären Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes setzen sich kritisch mit diesen Phänomenen auseinander
