Dieses Buch will einem Leser, der über hinlängliche Grundkenntnisse der Chemie und Physik verfügt, aber mit der modernen Chemie nicht vertraut ist, einen vielseitigen Einblick in das Wesen moderner Chemie geben. Es entstand aus einer Reihe von Vorlesungen, die ich als Professor der Chemie an der Universität in London mehrere Jahre lang für meine Studenten im ersten Semester gehalten habe. Mit diesen Vorlesungen wollte ich ursprünglich nur dem veralteten Schulunterricht, mit dem diese Studenten zur Universität kamen, entgegenwirken. Doch bald stellten sich noch weitere Vorteile heraus. Einmal gestattete dieser Kurs den Studenten einen Blick aus der Vogelschau auf die moderne Chemie, so daß sie das Gebiet schon als Ganzes kennengelernt hatten, noch bevor sie sich später mit dem Studium der Einzelheiten befaßten. Und schließlich war es dadurch möglich, die moderne Orbitaltheorie in anorganische wie organische Chemie von Anfang an einzuflechten und die Reaktivität mit der Vorstellung des Übergangszustandes zu verbinden. Mit diesem Buch hoffe ich Anregungen zu ähnlichen Versuchen zu geben, und ich bin davon überzeugt, daß solche Versuche für Lehrer wie Studenten sehr erfreulich ausfallen werden. Für viele wertvolle Anregungen, kritische Stellungnahmen und Verbesserungen schulde ich meinen Freunden, die mehrere Entwürfe dieses Buches gelesen haben, großen Dank.
