The term comprehensive or 'overall' security was coined in Japan during the 1970s, but it has also found adherents in other Asian countries, especially in Southeast Asia. The article discusses the concepts of comprehensive security (developed in Japan and some ASEAN countries), common security (originated in Europe as a response to the overall East-West rivalry) and cooperative security developed by the Canadian-initiated North Pacific Cooperative Security dialogue.
