Die Frage, wie stark in den christlichen und jüdischen Gemeinden im ersten Jahrhundert die Tendenzen zum Bekehrungswillen ausgeprägt waren, wird in der frühchristlichen Forschung seit langem sehr kontrovers diskutiert. Dabei wird die Präsenz des Missionsgedankens in den frühen Kirchen und Synagogen entweder kategorisch abgelehnt oder aber emphatisch bestätigt. John P. Dickson untersucht die jüdische Literatur aus der Zeit des zweiten Tempels und die Paulusbriefe unter historischen und philologischen Aspekten und bietet so ein sorgfältig nuancierendes Bild der Ausformung und Ausbreitung der Mission im Judentum und frühen Christentum. Er streicht vor allem heraus, daß die Sicht des Paulus auf den Missionsgedanken stark von seinem jüdischen Erbe geprägt wurde.
