Das Eiland der meereskundigen Phaiaken, so darf man nachträumen, war die letzte Station des Odysseus vor seiner Heimkehr. Nausikaa brachte ihn zu ihrem Vater Alkinoos, dem König der Phaiaken. Er gewährte Odysseus Gastfreundschaft und ließ ihn zurück nach Ithaka geleiten. Funde aus älteren und jüngeren Grabungen auf Kerkyra führen zu Profanbauten und Heiligtümern, erinnern an Menschen und Gottheiten, bezeugen einstigen Reichtum, der auf wirtschaftlicher Bedeutung der Insel unter griechischer und römischer Herrschaft beruhte. Nachdem die alte Stadt verlassen war, verwandelte sie sich in einen zur Selbstbedienung einladenden Steinbruch. Jahrhundertelang nutzten ihn Byzantiner, Venezianer, Franzosen, Engländer und sogar Korfioten selbst, denn er bot qualitätvolles Baumaterial. Unter den neun Themenkreisen, die sich sowohl zugänglichem archäologischen Material als auch anderen attraktiven Besichtigungszielen der Insel widmen, erhielt der Artemistempel mit seiner berühmten Gorgodarstellung im Giebelrelief ein umfangreiches Kapitel.
