Die Fertigungsverfahren der Umformtechnik werden in der industriellen Produktion in einem vor wenigen Jahrzehnten noch nicht für möglich gehaltenen Ausmaß angewandt. Neben ihr traditionelles Gebiet, die Halbzeugfertigung durch Walzen, Strangpressen, Schmieden, ist die Erzeugung einzelner, ganz oder nahezu einbaufertiger Werkstücke getreten. Hier hat sich insbesondere das Blechteil einen bedeutenden Marktanteil erobert. Maschinen und Einrichtungen, Werkzeugbaustoffe, Werkstückstoffe, Schmierstoffe wurden mit dem Ziel einer Steigerung der Mengenleistung bei gleichzeitig erhöhter Genauigkeit weiter entwickelt. Neue Verfahren traten neben die ständig verbesserten der Massiv- und Blechumformung, wobei bisher unübliche Geschwindigkeiten, Drücke und Temperaturen benutzt werden. Gestützt auf neue Erkenntnisse der Metallkunde, Plastizitätstheorie und Tribologie beschleunigt sich diese Entwicklung der Verfahren der Umformtechnik gegenwärtig noch. Obwohl zahlreiche Zeitschriftenveröffentlichungen hierüber berichten und auch eine Anzahl guter Einzeldarstellungen über theoretische Grundlagen, Maschinen und Verfahren der Umformtechnik vorliegt, fehlt es doch an einer zusammenfassenden Darstellung der Grundlagen und Verfahren, die gleichzeitig den Studierenden und den bereits in der Praxis stehenden Ingenieuren eine Einführung in das Fachgebiet ist und ihm das Grundwissen zur vertieften Behandlung von Einzelfragen vermitteln kann. Die aufgezeigte Lücke mit der angedeuteten Zielsetzung zu schließen, ist das Anliegen des dreiteiligen "Lehrbuches der Umformtechnik", dessen zweiter Band "Massivumformung" hiermit der Öffentlichkeit VI Vorwort vorgelegt wird. Auch der dritte Band "Blechumformung" wird in Kürze folgen, nachdem der erste Band "Grundlagen" im Frühjahr 1972 erschienen ist
