Augustinus gilt als einflussreicher Lehrer des Abendlandes, der das Denken der mittelalterlichen Philosophen und Theologen weithin prägte und Anregungen bis in die Gegenwart gibt. Mit der Rezeption Augustins beschäftigten sich im Januar 2008 zahlreiche namhafte Forscher bei einem internationalen Symposion in Mainz, dessen Erträge von Norbert Fischer herausgegeben und in einer eigens hierfür konzipierten Ausstellung vorgestellt werden. Dort präsentiert die Universitätsbibliothek der Katholischen Universität Eichstätt-Ingolstadt eigene Bestände sowie Leihgaben bemerkenswerter handschriftlicher Zeugnisse der Rezipienten, beispielsweise die 1990 entdeckten Sermones Dolbeau sowie Autographen von Blondel, Rilke und Heidegger. Der dazu erscheinende Band bietet eine Einführung in die Grundlagen der Erforschung der Wirkungsgeschichte, zu den Anfängen der Augustinus-Rezeption, zur Bedeutung Augustins für die gegenwärtige Philosophie und Theologie und stellt die Sammlung der Eichstätter Augustinus-Bestände vor. Ergänzt wird der Band durch einen Bildteil mit Faksimiles der bedeutendsten Dokumente.
