Der Ich-Erzähler des Romans lernt in Montevideo den ehemaligen Notar und Kunstsammler Waldemar Hansen kennen. Beide Männer sind nicht mehr jung, führen ein zurückgezogenes Leben und beginnen sich regelmäßig zu treffen. Eines Tages erhält der Ich-Erzähler die Nachricht, dass Hansen sich aus einem Fenster gestürzt hat, er stirbt kurze Zeit später im Krankenhaus. Sein Freund bleibt ratlos zurück und sucht Erklärungen für diese Kurzschlusshandlung bei der Tochter, der Schwester und der ehemaligen Geliebten Hansens. Er fährt schließlich in eine kleine Siedlung im Norden Uruguays, wo auch Hansen gewesen ist und in seltsame Vorgänge verstrickt wurde. Zurück in Montevideo erfährt der Erzähler ein Familiengeheimnis, das Hansens Leben geprägt hat. Der in Uruguay lebende Argentinier Carlos María Domínguez (zuletzt "Die blinde Küste", BA 11/10) hat ein nachdenklich stimmendes Buch über Freundschaft, Einsamkeit, Familie und die Unmöglichkeit, eine andere Person jemals wirklich zu kennen, geschrieben. Ab mittleren Beständen gut einsetzbar. (Helga Winkelmann)
