Im späten 18. Jahrhundert wurde die Idee des modernen Individuums geboren. Doch es kam als Zwillingsfigur auf die Welt: in Gestalt des vermeintlich aus sich selbst schöpfenden, einmaligen Subjekts und in Gestalt eines ungeliebten Schattens - des homme copie. Das späte 18. Jahrhundert gilt als Entstehungszeit des modernen Individualismus und somit der Idee eines einzigartigen, unvergleichlichen und eben deshalb unnachahmlichen Ichs. Die Nachahmung wurde damit zum Sündenfall des modernen Originalitätskults. Die Krisen und Paradoxien, aber auch die Vitalität und Produktivität der modernen Individualitätsauffassung entspringen dieser Spannung zwischen Einzigartigkeit und Nachahmung. Kristian Donko kommt anhand literatur- und kulturgeschichtlicher Untersuchungen dieser zentralen Konfiguration der modernen Individualitätsgeschichte auf die Spur
