Jahrhundert etablierten europäische Regierungen ein Netzwerk ständiger diplomatischer Beziehungen. Damals wurde auch das Amt des Botschafters begründet. Mit Beginn der Frühen Neuzeit liessen sich Botschafter und Gesandte in ihrer Rolle als international agierende Diplomaten porträtieren. Diese Bildnisse sind eindrückliche Inszenierungen ihres Selbstverständnisses und Statusbewusstseins. Anhand von 25 ausgewählten Gemälden des 15. bis 18. Jahrhunderts sowie zahlreichen Vergleichsabbildungen führt die Autorin vor, wie sich Diplomaten im Verlauf der Zeit darstellten, welche Bildstrategien und Intentionen Künstler und Auftraggeber verfolgten.
