Zusammenfassung: In der Diskussion um die Vertreibung der Deutschen aus den Ostgebieten (vgl. zuletzt die zusammenfassende Darstellung von M. Beer: ID-A 28/11) setzt der amerikanische Historiker einen interessanten Kontrapunkt, weil er sich hauptsächlich auf das Handeln der ausweisenden Staaten und der westlichen Alliierten konzentriert und sich statt auf die Stimmen der Betroffenen lieber auf die Akten des Internationalen Roten Kreuzes stützt. In Douglas' Schilderung der politischen Hintergründe und der verschiedenen Etappen der zunächst "wilden", dann organisierten Vertreibungen und der Zustände in den Internierungslagern entsteht gleichwohl das an Deutlichkeit nichts übrig lassende Bild einer chaotischen und brutalen, millionenfach Leiden und Ungerechtigkeit erzeugenden Aktion, deren dramatische Folgen für die Menschen bei zweifelhaftem politischen Nutzen nicht nur von den ausweisenden Staaten, sondern auch von den Westalliierten billigend in Kauf genommen wurden. Anspruchsvolle Darstellung, die thematisch einen breiteren, historisch interessierten Leserkreis ansprechen kann. (2) (Engelbrecht Boese)
