Manuscript 2188 of the Bibliothèque nationale de France is the sole record of a curious late thirteenth-century fabliau by the otherwise unknown Douin de Lavesne. By giving its ignorant and dishonest hero the blurred nature of a madman and by setting him in the context of a comical story, Douin counters a literary tradition hostile to the figure of the villain. In the end the reader cannot help but feel indulgent towards the unremittingly wicked Trubert.
