Georg-Wilhelm Rodewald (1921–1991) war ein Pionier der Herzchirurgie. Nach seinen pathophysiologischen Vorarbeiten und der Forschung am Physiologischen Institut der Universität Kiel trat Georg-Wilhelm Rodewald 1952 als Assistent in die Chirurgische Universitätsklinik Hamburg ein, wo er schon früh durch Albert Lezius an die Herzchirurgie herangeführt wurde. Er baute später die Herzchirurgie als eigene Disziplin in Hamburg auf. 1966 wurde er als einer der ersten deutschen Herzchirurgen zum Extraordinarius ernannt. 1969 folgte die Berufung auf den für ihn geschaffenen Lehrstuhl für Herz- und Gefäßchirurgie und experimentelle Kardiologie verbunden mit der Ernennung zum ordentlichen Professor an der Universität Hamburg. 1971 war Rodewald Mitbegründer und erster Präsident der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Thorax-, Herz- und Gefäßchirurgie. Mit den Briefen aus dem Zeitraum 1944 bis 1970 erinnert Ingelene Rodewald an den beschwerlichen Weg ihres Mannes vom Medizinstudenten zum Ordinarius.
