Noam Chomskys Veröffentlichung Syntactic Structures (1957) revolutionierte nicht nur die Theorie- und Modellbildung in der Linguistik, sondern veränderte auch das Denken in anderen Disziplinen. In der Folge dieser Entwicklung entstand die Psycholinguistik als interdisziplinärer Forschungsansatz zwischen Linguistik und Psychologie. Zunächst orientierte sich die Psycholinguistik in starkem Maße an der von Chomsky entwickelten generativen Transformationsgrammatik. Die Forschung wurde beherrscht von der Frage nach der psychischen Realität des Regelapparats der generativen Transformationsgrammatik. Mithilfe sogenannter Click-Experimente wurde überprüft, ob die Reihenfolge der Regeln, die bei der Erzeugung/ Ableitung von Sätzen angewendet werden, den psychologischen Vorgängen bei der Satzverarbeitung entspricht (für einen Überblick s. Levelt, 1978). Die Befunde dieser Untersuchungen deuteten zwar darauf hin, daß die Gliederung eines Satzes in Phrasenstrukturen auch für die menschliche Sprachverarbeitung eine relevante Informationseinheit zu sein scheint; problematisch blieb dagegen die Annahme, daß Produktion und Verständnis eines Satzes um so schwieriger werden, je mehr Transformationen bei der Ableitung eines Satzes in bezug auf Oberflächen- und Tiefenstruktur des generativen Modells notwendig sind. Annahmen wie die Korrelationshypothese oder Korrespondenzhypothese (Watt, 1970) verdeutlichen die Kontroverse um das Ausmaß des Zusammenhangs zwischen der Komplexität der transformationellen Herleitung eines Satzes (Derivational Theory of Complexity) und der psychologischen Komplexität. Die empirische Evidenz zeigt, daß die Anzahl der Transformationen nicht notwendigerweise die psychologische Komplexitat erhöht, sondern ableitungsmäßig komplexere 7 Sätze sogar oft einfacher zu produzieren und zu verstehen sind
