Living History, Reenactment und Rollenspiele verzeichnen in den letzten Jahrzehnten einen hohen Zulauf. Am Beispiel des Münchner Cowboy-Clubs widmet sich Cindy Drexl einem Forschungsfeld, das in den Empirischen Kulturwissenschaften bisher eine marginale Rolle spielt: der Indianisten- und Cowboyszene. Gerade in einer Gesellschaft, in der Lebensläufe projektförmig und Hobbys dem Lifestyle und den Marktlogiken unterworfen werden, erscheint die Mitgliedschaft in einem Verein anachronistisch. Aber was bewegt Erwachsene, oft über Jahre hinweg, jedes Wochenende in einem Cowboy-Club, ein möglichst "authentisches" historisches Erlebnis mit anderen auszugestalten? Welche Sehnsüchte und Faszinationen sind damit verbunden? Wie gehen die Übergänge vom Alltags-Ich zum Hobby-Ich vonstatten? Um einen direkten Zugang zur Hobbyistenszene zu erhalten, hat sich die Forscherin selbst anverwandelt. Multisensorische, autoethnographische Erfahrungen kombiniert mit leitfadengestützten Interviews bilden die methodische Grundlage dieser Studie. Diese bietet aus einer emischen Perspektive tiefe Einblicke in ein Hobbyphänomen und die Bedeutung von Vergangenheit
