The economic reforms that have begun in China in 1978 had a number of major objectives. These were a shift in focus towards meeting consumption needs, a move to intensive development based on increased efficiency of resource use rather than extensive development, a greater autonomy for production units, and a more open economy. Issues that arose in the pursuit of these objectives included the timing of the stages of reform, the linkages between the various parts of the reform package and between different economic sectors, and foreign reaction. The authors examine these issues in relation to the Chinese wool industry. (DÜI-Sen)
