Eisens "Spielen im Schatten des Todes" (BA 12/93) ab, die Geschichte jüdischer Kinder und Kinderhilfsgruppen in Europa zwischen 1933 und 1945 eine eher untergeordnete Rolle spielt, wird durch Dworks tief beeindruckende, derzeit wohl umfassendste sozialgeschichtliche Studie zum Thema inhaltlich reicher. Die Professorin für Geschichte am Child Study Center der Yale University rekonstruiert und analysiert anhand schriftlichen und mündlichen Quellenmaterials (Methoden der oral history) die täglichen Lebensbedingungen und -erfahrungen jüdischer Kinder zu Hause, im Untergrund, in Durchgangslagern, Ghettos und Vernichtungslagern sowie nach dem Krieg.
