    ISBN: 978-3-318-00311-6
Series Statement: Advances in biological psychiatry Vol. 19
Content: Our scientific approach to depression depends on the theoretical framework available for depression and its etiology, and on the tools we have to investigate brain function. The implication of this means that models of depression will change with time. This book brings together recent updates on the main themes of depression research, presented by active researchers. One major advance has been in brain imaging. Consequently five of the chapters deal with this method, either by examining brain structure, brain function, or functional neurochemistry. A second topic is the renaissance of psychological approaches, both in terms of the neuropsychology of depression and the use of effective psychotherapy as an important adjunct to pharmacology. Recent years have seen a change from one-neurotransmitter explanations to delineating complex relationships and interaction. One such interaction, that between stressm hormones and serotonin, is explored in this volume. Finally, the role of behavioral animal models is discussed. This book will be of immense value to researchers working in the field, as well as clinicians and trainees in understanding the rationale of new diagnostic and treatment approaches. Biologists, pharmacologists and physicians will also benefit from the data on current depression research

    Format: 1 online resource (VI + 130 pages) : , 29 figures, 14 tables
    ISBN: 3-318-00987-3
Series Statement: Advances in Biological Psychiatry, Vol.22
Content: Single photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) is a relatively cheap and widely available instrument for the examination of brain perfusion, cerebral blood flow and activity of neurotransmitter systems. The European project “SPECT in dementia” sets out to overcome some of the factors holding back the development of clinical neuroimaging. It has developed a methodology for combining results from different imaging centres, at the same time making scan assessment more objective and powerful. Moreover, using objective voxel-based methods of image analysis improves the diagnostic performance of less-experienced clinicians and contributes to their training. This publication gives an excellent general overview of the new methods of image analysis and sharing. It is complemented by a systematic review of the diagnostic utility of SPECT in dementia and a cost-effectiveness model of diagnostic improvements in Alzheimer’s disease. This book is essential reading for all scientists, economists and clinicians in geriatric medicine, neurology and psychiatry, neuro-radiology and nuclear medicine working with patients suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's disease, who want to stay ahead in this rapid developing field.

Content: Psychiatric symptoms are common in the neurological and geriatric care of patients with Parkinson's disease. This book assembles short reviews from experts in the field to chart the various psychiatric syndromes known in Parkinson's disease, their presentation, etiology and management. Presented are special topics on epidemiology of psychiatric symptoms, affective disorders and apathy, early cognitive impairment through to dementia, visuoperceptual dysfunction, psychotic disorders, sleep disturbances, impulse disorders and sexual problems. Further, rarely discussed issues, such as the relationship between somatoform disorders and parkinsonism are reviewed. This publication is essential reading for old age psychiatrists, gerontologists and neurologists who work with patients suffering from Parkinson's disease.
