Nach seiner engagierten Streitschrift "2017" (ID-G 47/14) macht sich der Autor hier stark für die Tugend der Demut. Dies geschieht nicht ohne Kritik an selbstgerechten Glücksversprechen aus der modernen Ratgeberphilosophie, die auch in der vermeintlichen Gelassenheit letztendlich die Optimierung suchen, ohne die Komfortzone zu verlassen. Demut ist unbequemer. Sie hält das Ungewisse und Nicht-Machbare aus, übt Verzicht statt Gier, entscheidet nicht nach Kosten-Nutzen-Rechnung und schreibt auch der Kirche so einiges hinter die Ohren. Sein Nachdenken wird nicht getragen von starren Dogmen und kirchlichen Strukturen, sondern eher inspiriert von der Weisheit zahlreicher Mitdenkender wie D. Sölle, D. Bonhoeffer, A. Schweitzer, P. Tillich und viele andere. Die Aussicht "Was uns gelassener leben lässt" rutscht hier nicht auf das Niveau gemütlicher Allgemeinplätze, sondern bleibt vielschichtig und offen für Auseinandersetzungen mit sich selbst und einem Leben, das von Übung und Scheitern, Respekt und Ehrfurcht mehr geprägt ist als von Erfolgsversprechen. Gelassenheit ist nicht machbar, und so verzichtet dieses Buch auf einfache Ratgeber-Lösungen für mehr Lebensglück. Die alte Demut wird hier in neuer Weise als eine Haltung beschrieben, die nicht neu erfunden werden muss, aber überraschend wiedergefunden werden kann.
