Christian Holler begann in der Weimarer Republik als Vermittler von Industrieversicherungen. Als er 1969 starb, leitete er eines der erfolgreichsten Firmengeflechte für Versicherungsvermittlung in der Bundesrepublik. Neben seinem Anteil an der ursprünglichen Firma Gradmann & Holler besaß er den Volkswagen-Versicherungsdienst (VVD), den er durch enge Kontakte mit der VW-Konzernleitung zu einem international tätigen Unternehmen ausgebaut hatte. Nach Hollers Tod bemühte sich seine Witwe Asta, sein Werk fortzuführen. Sie bestimmte schließlich auch die genaue Ausgestaltung der Stiftung, in die das Vermögen der Hollers nach ihrem Tod überging. Die Holler-Stiftung wurde 1990 errichtet; ihre Entwicklung in den ersten 20 Jahren ihres Bestehens bildet den Abschluss des Buchs.
