Nur wenige Worte wie »Schlange«, »Sünde« und »Apfel« genügen, um die Erinnerung an diese Erzählung wachzurufen. Es sind die großen Fragen der Menschheit, die an dieser Stelle thematisiert werden: In welchem Verhältnis steht der Mensch zu seiner Umwelt? Wie lässt sich das Verhältnis zu den Tieren beschreiben? Wie ist die Beziehung zwischen Mann und Frau geprägt? Wie ist das Leben des Mannes charakterisiert und wie das Leben der Frau? Wie kommt der Tod in die Welt? Jüdische, christliche und islamische Ausleger habe diese Erzählung aufgegriffen und in zahlreichen, zum Teil recht bunt anmutenden Legenden weiter ausgestaltet. Als wichtige Themen erscheinen die Frage nach der Herkunft des Bösen, nach der Macht der Sünde und nach der Möglichkeit des Menschen, sich aus diesen Schuldzusammenhängen zu befreien. Während das Judentum und der Islam die Bedeutung der göttlichen Weisung betonen, macht Paulus die typologische Entsprechung zwischen Adam und Christus zu einem Herzstück seiner heilsgeschichtlichen Argumentation. Dieser vierte Band der Reihe »Judentum, Christentum und Islam« stellt zunächst die biblische Paradiesgeschichte vor und beschreibt dann in klarer und allgemeinverständlicher Art die unterschiedlichen Traditionen, die sich in den drei monotheistischen Religionen mit der Paradieserzählung verbinden. Adam und Eva werden darin als Teil eines gemeinsamen Erbes sichtbar, ohne die Unterschiede und Spezifika zu verwischen.
