Weil die Sowjetunion in der Ära des Kalten Kriegs der wichtigste militärische Schutzherr in der arabischen Welt war, wird vielfach angenommen, dass die arabischen Länder auch die sowjetische Militärdoktrin übernommen haben und dass hierin die Ursache für die mäßigen Kriegserfolge liegt. Die Analyse der Autoren für Ägypten (1973), Syrien (1973) und Irak (1991) ergibt demgegenüber ein differenzierteres Bild. In den untersuchten Ländern ist das "sowjetische Modell" in recht unterschiedlichem Ausmaß übernommen worden, und der Vergleich zeigt, dass der Grad der Anpassung einer fremden Militärdoktrin an eigene kulturelle Verhaltensmuster und militärische Erfordernisse ausschlaggebend für Erfolg oder Misserfolg ist.
