Tagore, Gandhi, Yoga oder die Bhagavad Gita: Zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts besteht in Kreisen der Reformpädagogik und Jugendbewegung ein großes Interesse an Indien. Der Erziehungswissenschaftler und Indologe Elija Horn geht der Frage nach, warum reformorientierte Pädagoginnen und Pädagogen um 1918-1933 ausgerechnet an indischem Gedankengut – oder dem, was sie dafür halten – Gefallen finden. Dazu untersucht der Autor die häufig lebensreformerisch gefärbte Sehnsucht nach Indien mithilfe des von Edward Said entwickelten Theorems des Orientalismus und erforscht damit die diskursiven Verknüpfungen zwischen gängigen Vorstellungen von Indien, zeitgenössischer Reformpädagogik und den damit einhergehenden (globalen) Machtverhältnissen. Ferner erstellt er einen Überblick über deutsch-indische Begegnungen im Rahmen der internationalen New Education sowie in jugendbewegten Zusammenschlüssen, um möglichen Austauschprozessen sowie deren Verstrickung in Orientalismus nachzuspüren.
