Die Geschichte von Sanyutei Encho beginnt wie die Populärfassung einer griechischen Tragödie: Der junge Samurai Heitaro gerät auf dem Markt mit einem stadtbekannten Trunkenbold in Streit und tötet ihn. Aber der Getötete war selbst Samurai, dessen Nachkommen durch ihren Ehrenkodex zur Blutrache verpflichtet sind. Das Erzählen schlägt noch mancherlei Haken. Gespenster treten auf und werden zur Heimsuchung, Liebe und Anzüglichkeiten haben ihren Ort, Schürzenjäger suchen ihr Glück und finden es. Wir lesen eine Erzählung, die übervoll ist an Wendungen und neuen Verwicklungen.
