Im Mai 1911 heiratete die ausgebildete Sängerin Helene Nahowska im Alter von 25 Jahren den aufstrebenden Komponisten Alban Berg. Als dieser 1935 starb, war sie 50 Jahre alt. Sie überlebte ihn um mehr als 40 Jahre und sah sich als seine Witwe vor die Aufgabe gestellt, seine Person und seinen künstlerischen Nachlass im kulturellen Gedächtnis und im Kanon der Musikkultur dauerhaft zu verankern: Sie edierte Briefe, schrieb und konzipierte Biographisches und initiierte die Gründung der Alban Berg Stiftung, die Alban Berg bereits testamentarisch vorgesehen hatte und die sich nach dem Tod Helene Bergs 1976 bis heute um das künstlerische und materielle Erbe kümmert. Kurz: Sie handelte als Komponistenwitwe. Nicht nur wegen der langen Dauer ihrer Witwenschaft darf für Helene Berg angenommen werden, dass sie sich mit dieser Rolle aktiv auseinandergesetzt hat - zumal sie in engstem Austausch mit Alma Mahler-Werfel stand, die sich bereits seit 1911 vor ähnliche Aufgaben gestellt sah. Jenseits der bislang üblichen Sichtweisen auf Helene Berg, die Komponistengattin, widmet sich dieser Band ihrer Rolle als Nachlassverwalterin, ihren Handlungsspielräumen als Witwe und ihre Strategien, die Erinnerung an Alban Berg wachzuhalten und zu gestalten
