Bei der Lebenszufriedenheit haben sich Ost- und Westdeutsche seit der Wiedervereinigung deutlich angenähert, wenn auch die in Ostdeutschland lebenden Menschen weiterhin weniger zufrieden sind als die in Westdeutschland. Die durch die Corona-Pandemie ausgelöste Krise könnte diese Annäherung nun umkehren. Untersuchungen auf Basis der SOEP-CoV-Befragung zeigen aber, dass dies nicht der Fall ist, gleichwohl aber Unterschiede in den Reaktionen zu beobachten sind. So steigen die Einsamkeit und die depressive Gestimmtheit bei den im Osten lebenden Menschen im April mit Beginn der Eindämmungsmaßnahmen zwar signifikant stärker als bei den im Westen lebenden Menschen, sinken dafür aber mit den Lockerungen auch wieder schneller. Differenziertere Analysen zeigen zudem, dass die psychische Verfasstheit auch mit Faktoren wie Einkommen, Geschlecht und Alter zusammenhängt. Im Osten lebende Frauen sind stärker psychisch in Mitleidenschaft gezogen als Männer und Frauen in Westdeutschland. Dafür erweist sich aber die junge, im Osten lebende Generation der unter 35-Jährigen als psychisch krisenfester als ihre Altersgenossen im Westen und insbesondere ältere Generationen im Osten.
