On June 10, 1944, Waffen-SS soldiers destroyed the French village of Oradour. In her study, Andrea Erkenbrecher examines how the Germans dealt with the massacre after 1949. She investigates the legal prosecution of the perpetrators, reparation payments, the significance of German Oradour revisionism, and the possibilities and limits of reconciliation – without losing sight of the survivors and those left behind by the massacre.

Wie ging man in Deutschland nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg mit dem Erbe des Massakers in Oradour um? Das Dorf, das Soldaten der Waffen-SS 1944 zerstörten und in dem sie 643 Menschen töteten, wurde in Frankreich das Symbol für das Leiden unter der deutschen Besatzung. Andrea Erkenbrecher untersucht, wie sich Politik, Justiz und Zivilgesellschaft in West-, Ost- und wiedervereinigtem Deutschland zu dem Verbrechen verhielten. Sie fragt nach der strafrechtlichen Verfolgung der Täter, Entschädigungszahlungen, der Rolle des deutschen Oradour-Revisionismus sowie den Möglichkeiten und Grenzen auf der Suche nach Versöhnung. Im Blick bleiben dabei stets die doppelte deutsche Nachkriegsgeschichte, die innerfranzösische Situation und nicht zuletzt die Erwartungen der Überlebenden und Hinterbliebenen des Massakers.
