Im 20. Jh. entstand eine breite Bewegung, die als Ökumenische Bewegung alle Kirchen erfasste. Zunächst werden die Vorgeschichte und die frühen Weltkonferenzen bis zur Gründung des ÖRK (Ökumenischer Rat der Kirchen) im Jahr 1948 in den Blick genommen. Zum Teil parallel vollzog sich die Annäherung der Konfessionen in Nazi-Deutschland. Die Zeit nach dem 2. Weltkrieg ist von den großen Weltkonferenzen des ÖRK und katholischerseits von Öffnungstendenzen gekennzeichnet, die im II. Vaticanum ihren Höhepunkt fanden. In einem letzten Kapitel werden die jüngsten Entwicklungen vor allem in Deutschland nachgezeichnet.
