Among the most prolific sources of Anatolia's rich musical culture are the âsiks (minstrels) and local artists. Through their instruments and voices these people express the cultural knowledge of every region and society, and give back to their societies what they have taken from tradition. Among them are some very powerful singers and instrumentalists, and then there are the minstrels (âsiks) of Anatolia... These do not exist outside the tradition; but practice their art in a way so as to express themselves and that which is unique to their own personalities. Minstrels seem to exist for the sake of struggle. Some carry on a personal struggle for love, peace, justice and freedom; others support the struggle of everyone... One of the most striking characteristics of Nes,et Ertas,'s music is its rich melodic forms. Poems by âsiks such as Karacaoglan, Agâhî, Âsik Arap Mustafa, Toklumenli Âsik Sait, Ali I.zzet (Özkan) and Nesimi, set to Nes,et Ertas,'s rich melodies, have become immortalized. It must be made clear that the source of this richness, along with Nes,et Ertas,'s skill, is the music culture of the Abdal tribe. To understand the Abdals in general, and Nes,et Ertas, in particular, one must know this tribe's social structures and philosophies well. These tribes, with their music, carry love, enthusiasm, joy, from the steppes, the mountain meadows, to the people among whom they live. In the music of Muharrem Ertas,, the "ancient oak" of the tribe, one hears history; in the music of his son Neset Ertas,, you hear a breath of love proclaiming deep frienship. Rather than trying to do justice to Nes,et Ertas, in a small booklet such as this, I invite you to listen for yourselves; as his music tells more about him than words ever could. (Kalan)
