In einer der Barriadas, den Armenvierteln rund um die peruanische Hauptstadt Lima, wohnt die 13-jährige Juliana mit ihrer Familie. Die Mutter verdient auf dem Markt das Geld, der diktatorische Stiefvater gibt es wieder aus, meistens für Alkohol. Ab und zu trifft sich Juliana mit ihrem älteren Bruder Clavito, der nicht mehr zuhause wohnt. Er ist bei Don Pedro untergekommen. Juliana möchte ebenfalls dorthin, denn ihr ist das Leben mit dem gewalttätigen Stiefvater und ihrer gedemütigten Mutter unerträglich geworden. Don Pedro nimmt allerdings nur Jungen auf. Kurzentschlossen schneidet Juliana ihr Haar ab, zieht Jungenkleider an und bittet als 'Julian' um Aufnahme in die Gruppe von Don Pedro. Ihr Bruder verrät sie natürlich nicht und so zieht Juliana jeden Tag mit den Jungen los. In Kleingruppen singen und musizieren sie in den Stadtbussen und verlangen dafür von den Passagieren Geld. Ihren Verdienst müssen sie Don Pedro am Abend abliefern, als Gegenleistung für ihr Dach über dem Kopf. Juliana durchschaut sehr bald, dass Don Pedro nur in seine eigene Tasche arbeitet und sogar Zwietracht unter den Jungen sät, damit keine Solidarität unter ihnen entsteht. Eines Tages entdecken die Jungen, dass Juliana ein Mädchen ist und wollen sie deswegen zur Rechenschaft ziehen. Juliana gelingt es jedoch, die anderen für sich einzunehmen und gemeinsam verlassen sie Don Pedro. Der Film schließt mit einer Utopie: Ein altes Schiff bietet den Kinder eine neue Bleibe. Juliana träumt von einem selbstbestimmten, glücklichen Leben für sich und die anderen. (Bundesverband Jugend und Film e.V.)
