Elektra wurde an der Wiener Staatsoper zum ersten Mal 1909 aufgeführt. Seitdem gehört diese Oper von Richard Strauss zum unverzichtbaren Bestandteil des Wiener Opernrepertoires. Die Neuinszenierung im Jahre 1989 bedeutete für den Dirigenten Claudio Abbado sein erstes Strauss-Dirigat an der Wiener Staatsoper. Durch die Verpflichtung der Solistinnen Eva Marton, Brigitte Fassbaender und Cheryl Studer war es gelungen, die weltweit führenden Interpretinnen der anspruchsvollen Partien zu gewinnen. Eva Marton stellte mit vollem Engagement in der sängerischen und schauspielerischen Darstellung eine Elektra auf die Bühne, die als aus eigenem Willen Ausgestoßene zur unbarmherzigen Rachegöttin wird. Brigitte Fassbaender gab die Klytämnestra weniger als ein verderbtes Weib, als eine von ihren Gewissensbissen geplagte Frau, die seit ihrer Untat keine Ruhe mehr finden kann. Glaubwürdig vermittelte die Chrysothemis von Cheryl Studer ihre zarte Empfindsamkeit und ihre Ängste in einer grausamen Umwelt. Die vorzüglichen Sängerdarsteller Franz Grundheber als Orest und James King als Aegisth wussten mit sparsamen Mitteln ihre Figuren genau zu charakterisieren. Zu einer musikalischen Sternstunde wurde diese Neuinszenierung durch die musikalische Leitung von Claudio Abbado und das Spiel der Wiener Philharmoniker. Abbados Strauss-Deutung wurde zum Meilenstein der Rezeptionsgeschichte des anspruchsvollen Werks. Abbado deckte die vielfachen stilistischen und strukturellen Verflechtungen in dieser Partitur mit ihren Verbindungen zu Gustav Mahler einerseits und zur Wiener Schule andererseits deutlich auf. Die in vielen Aspekten verblüffende Analyse diente einer musikalischen Interpretation, die den Abend an der Wiener Staatsoper zu einem musiktheatralischen Ereignis erster Güte werden ließ.
