Waffen werden verherrlicht, angebetet und verflucht. Kurz, Waffen haben über ihre primäre Funktion hinaus eine große Bedeutung. Mit ihnen wird auf vielen Ebenen symbolisch kommuniziert.Obwohl diese Aspekte des Waffengebrauchs offensichtlich sind, wurden sie bisher kaum untersucht. Die vorliegende Studie schließt diese Lücke und nimmt dafür die Rolle der Waffe als Symbolträger in den Blick. Es geht um Werte, Vorstellungen und Anschauungen, die mit der Waffe und ihren Verwendungsmöglichkeiten verbunden sind und vermittelt werden.Die Studie untersucht die Waffensymbolik im Sozialen, Nationalen, Religiösen und im Körperlichen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf Handfeuerwaffen von der Frühen Neuzeit bis 1945. Als Ausgangsquellen dienen Soldatenlieder, historische Schriften und Bildmaterial. „Die Eisenbraut“ eröffnet neue Perspektiven. Zugleich ist sie die erste kulturwissenschaftliche Arbeit mit einer Systematik der Waffensymbolik.Urte Evert, Jg. 1975; Studium der Volkskunde/Europäischen Ethnologie, Soziologie sowie Ur- und Frühgeschichte in Münster. Promotion in Volkskunde/Europäischer Ethnologie 2014. Gegenwärtig arbeitet Urte Evert am Militärhistorischen Museum Flugplatz Berlin-Gatow.
