„Bis zum letzten Mann“ auszuhalten war der grundlegende Befehl, der den Kampfkommandanten deutscher Großstädte im Frühjahr 1945 erteilt wurde. Doch noch vor dem Beginn der eigentlichen Kampfhandlungen mussten viele von ihnen erst ein inneres Ringen mit sich selbst bestehen. Die Erkenntnis der militärischen Sinnlosigkeit jedes Widerstandes, die Verantwortung für die eigenen Soldaten und die Zivilbevölkerung auf der einen, der Glaube an die nationalsozialistische Führung, die Gehorsamspflicht sowie Angst um das eigene Leben auf der anderen Seite mussten die Kampfkommandanten vor eine innere Zerreißprobe stellen. Exemplarisch stellt Maximilian Fügen in seiner Untersuchung die Kampfkommandanten von acht deutschen Großstädten (Augsburg, Darmstadt, Frankfurt, Karlsruhe, Kassel, München, Stuttgart und Wiesbaden) gegenüber. Ausgehend von intensiven Archivrecherchen unterzieht er diese Kampfkommandanten einer vergleichenden Analyse in Bezug auf Werdegang, Persönlichkeit, nationalsozialistische Gesinnung, Entschluss für oder gegen eine Verteidigung bis zum Letzten und deren tatsächliche Umsetzung.
